Commodore's Monthly Summary

Here you will find the Commodore's page where we will keep you updated with a recap of events going on in The Villages Sailing Club.

Ahoy, sailors!

Thank you to everyone who attended last week's January meeting! I received some very positive feedback from my first time leading the club as commodore. And while there's a lot to do, I feel confident we're on the right track toward building a more inclusive and active club, and I hope you'll all join us at some of our upcoming events.

January Club Sail: Friday, Jan. 24 at Lake Harris Venetian Cove (rain date Wednesday, Jan.29) – We currently have 3 boats and 7 crew signed up, so there's definitely room for more! And don't forget to sign up for the rain date, too (it does not automatically carry over). If it's too cold on Jan. 24, we will switch to the "rain date." To join, use SignUp. Having trouble with SignUp? Send an email to me at sailthevillages@gmail.com and I'll be glad to help sign you up.

January Club Social: Monday, Jan. 27 at 5PM: Okahumpka Rec Center fire pit (or inside if too cold). Bring chairs and a dish to share. Just show up, no need to respond or sign up.

February Events: Details have not yet been finalized, but the club sail will be on Lake Fairview (rental boats available, we're looking for some experienced captains who don't usually get a chance to skipper, to take out one of the boats). More details coming, or reach out to me.

Outdoor Expo: Coming up February 28 and March 1 at Everglades Recreation Center. We'll be looking for a number of volunteers to man our table.

First charter cruise of 2025: SAVE THE DATES
This will be a 2-day event in St. Augustine, starting March 25 or 26.
Stay tuned - Lee Hall will be providing more details shortly, and updating the Excursions page on our website.

Survey of club member interests:

Keep an eye out, we will be sending a survey to all members later this month to find out what you think your club can do differently.

Other topics from the January meeting:

After introducing myself, I gave an abbreviated presentation about "Small Boat Sailing for Big Boat Sailors." This was all leading up to the main topics of the meeting, which included:

-      How can we get more boat owners in the club? Find them or help existing members?

-   How can the club get better exposure, including in the new villages to the south? (We intend to engage The Villages to make sure our interests are represented in plans for the new Central Lake.)

-      How can we better engage our membership? That includes new opportunities for volunteering and social media.

Visit the new Volunteer page on our website to see how you can get more involved in the club, and sign up to join our Outreach Committee or the Windward Guides.

Whew! That's a lot. Feel free to reach out to me, voice your opinions on some of the new directions I've proposed, and let me know how you can help!
